The Laments

I have painted several figures which seem to be in so much emotional pain.  It has caused much discussion between me, peers, and teachers.  Most people think I paint figures of this nature because I am portraying how I feel, and yes I am, but there is more to it than that.  In these paintings I am showing that I am truly a human being.  I have been told that God could not have claimed to have been a human unless he suffered pain, and by doing so, he can now relate to us.  Another reason for these figures is my relentless passion to portray and expose truth.  Pain is the emotion kept in the darkest places.  Due to the nature of the emotion, pain must often remain silenced personal memories.  In the same vain of thinking that the Realists thought, I paint the most ugly, common, and honest emotion we all share- pain.  I am not attempting to receive pity from onlookers.  If I was, I would make the figures look more like myself.  I am not trying to glorify pain.  I wish to let viewers know that there are people who struggle with hardships both inside and outside the body.  Many times people who have been through difficult trials find they relate to the expressions evoked by the paintings in ways they can't describe with words.  They are all visual laments as well as reassurance.  This painting reminds me of Jonah, Jesus, and the figural representation of loneliness, stubbornness, and sorrow that find themselves in our inner most being.
