This painting is designed to reflect the story of the fall of man and the feelings incorporated within the story. This painting can be viewed with very different interpretations than my own, so be sure to think about it before continuing to read my explanations. Since Renaissance times, the circle has been a symbol of eternity, and in Thailand, the circle represents reincarnation. The square is a symbol of the Earthly (ever heard of the saying “4 corners of the globe”) In baptismal fountains, you will commonly find the structure to be a circle and the square intertwined for its symbolic nature. Starting with this idea, I started with the circle and added a dimension to it, making it a sphere. The rest of the painting is meant to feel flat to emphasize the difference in the 3rd and 4th dimension. The figure is contained within a square that has been separated from the original frame of the world overlapping the sphere. The figure is meant to be the incarnation of guilt hiding its face and holding its aching heart as the figure recoils into a ball afraid and tormented by the guilt. The hot colors are meant to represent the frustration of all creation due to its corruption. My last comment will be this: I find it coincidental that the sphere is so similar to the structure of an eye. |
