The theme of this painting is “we are nature”.  Nature is not our "Mother".  When humanity harms nature like it is not a part of its own body, humanity harms itself.  I chose an anorexic figure instead of an obese or normal figure because the anorexic figure communicates vanity, self-destruction, and the loss of what is vital to the human body's existence.  Anorexia is a modern epidemic and the worst harm has come to the Earth in the most recent centuries.  Like the condition of anorexia, humanity's mental condition is now almost to the point that it cannot heal itself.  Soon, the figure will become a skeleton representative of death.  This is not coming from a radical "save the Earth" politician, nor is it coming from someone with a solution to the problem.  I am common man aware of his condition

First and foremost, the background is meant to be understood as an abstracted landscape or seascape.  The background is like the ocean- dark and cold.  It feels vast and empty and like a Rothko you might feel in danger of losing your identity and bearings by looking into it.  The two green sea lines wrap her body and bind her to the earth.  As much as an object is what it is bound to, she becomes nature.
